Waterside Dream

Waterside Dream

Water gently purls in its bed    -
Leisurely winding on through the mead
Sunlight off the surface glancing
Scattering mosaic of shade
Above it clouds of mayflies dancing
While willow warblers cadence fade

A dragonfly stretches new wings to the sun
Clinging fast to the blade of a reed
Translucent with delicate tracery of veins
He vacated the nymph he doesn’t need
A ghostly shell, its life is  done
Though still a lifelike form it feigns

Flotilla of moorhen -  tiny chicks flitting
Creeping through the rushes and sedge
Darting and hiding beside the edge
Stately swan majestically glides
Wings uplifted in galleon sail
As past the rushes he silently slides

Swooping tern scythes through the air
Light catching its wings
As it gracefully soars
The heavens enhancing
Sun warming our backs
And from  the  water surface lancing

Water meanders in lazy stream
Amid the rushes and canes
Absorbing music of bird that sings
I sit and watch and idly dream
In tranquility and harmony
With all these beautiful things
